We got a chance to talk to Alma Salinas From Alianza por los Derechos de los Animales de Coahuila AC. Alma is the CEO of ADAC and took the time to talk to us a little more about what the non-profit organization is doing in the state of Coahuila, Mexico.
Avenue Dogs (AD): Hi Alma! Can You Give Us A Quick Rundown of What Your Organization Does?
Alma: We rescue animals from neglect and abuse and place them in beautiful homes.
We promote massive and permanent sterilization campaigns. We also raise awareness about sterilization and responsible ownership, and encourage the reporting of animal abuse.
We have an adoption protocol that include:
- A written interview
- We request video and photos of the home
- We investigate the family
- We visit the home and sign the adoption contract
We also educate people to combat animal abandonment. Promote the rescue, sterilization, and adoption of rescued animals. We also encourage others to speak out about abuse in regards to animals.
Working comprehensively in massive sterilization campaigns as the only effective, ethical and cruelty-free method to deal with the street population. We promote educational work that involves society and we establish alliances with the different institutions aimed at this same end, always framed under these principles that govern us.
Our goal is to:
- Rescue from abandonment and place pets homes.
- Massive and permanent sterilization journeys.
- Education to raise awareness about sterilization and responsible pet ownership.
- Encourage animal abuse complaints.
Reduce the overpopulation of abandoned animals to avoid health problems by educating the public, making them aware of their ability to act favorably about their environment and their collective responsibility to the community in general.
Our Vision
Become a pioneer organization in the conceptualization and development of citizen networks and support groups that in collaboration with national institutions take actions regarding the promotion of;
- Aadoptions
- Sterilizations
- Protection
- Respect
- & Compliance with laws in defense of animals.
Creating a culture of respect and values in favor of life through the active participation of the entire society. Together, public health problems such as zoonosis and the projection of violence against our animals would be avoided.
AD: How Can People Help/Donate to Alianza por los Derechos de los Animales de Coahuila AC (ACAD)?
Alma: We are always in need of volunteers, donations (animal-related items and/or money). We can use help with transporting dogs as well as people willing to foster. And, of course, if you are looking to adopt one of our pets, we encourage you to do so. Choosing a rescue dog will give you more enjoyment than you can imagine!
AD: Do You Have Any Advice for People Wanting to Adopt Dogs in Mexico?
Alma: You should go into adoption with an open conscience about what the rescue of street animals mean and their behaviors of need for protection, training, and education. You should also have experience in dog behavior and have a training background. Also, a high tolerance and patience is needed for rescued puppies.
