Avenue Dogs is a team of researchers and writers who are committed to providing pet owner’s the guidance they need to be the best puppy-parents they can be. Although our site is for everyone across the globe, we’ve decided to highlight some local dog organizations across Mexico. We’re amazed at what some of the orgs on our list are able to accomplish with the day-to-day limitations they face.
Today, we have a truly worthy dog rescue to feature – Kan Cozumel. They’re a group of dedicated individuals who are helping reduce the street dog population on the island and surrounding areas.
You’d be surprised to learn just how far your dollar can go when it comes to helping local rescues like Kan – Cozumel. If you’re looking for a good place to volunteer your time or money, you can’t go wrong with this local rescue. You can contact Kan – Cozumel directly below;

Kan – Cozumel is a nonprofit organization that takes in abandoned and sick dogs on the island of Cozumel. They offer spay and neuter clinics to help prevent overpopulation on the island, as well. Kan is always looking for sponsors that can help them send the pups up north.
We reached out to the founder of Kan – Cozumel to find out more about some of the great things they’re doing for the local community. Laura De la Fuente was born in Cuernavaca but raised on Cozumel Island. She has been rescuing dogs on a regular basis since 15 years old, but started doing it “professionally” in 2017. Her goal is to be part of the team that will make Cozumel Free of Roaming Dogs.
Avenue Dogs (AD): Hi Laura! Can You Give Us A Quick Rundown of What Your Organization Does?
Laura: We mostly rescue dogs in Cozumel Island and from little towns we get to visit on our way to spay and neuter campaigns.
We do not have a shelter, all our rescues are fostered or at a dog hotel that give us special prices – making monetary donations a must for our business to succeed.
We organize spay and neuter campaigns (low cost and free) in other towns where it’s needed more than Cozumel. We have done 2 campaigns in Tizimin and 2 in Colonia Yucatán.
We also promote information and try to motivate dog and cat owners to have good ownership practices. Mainly we do it through facebook and local events.
AD: How Can People Help/Donate to Kan – Cozumel?
Laura: We can receive monetary donations through paypal or our website www.kancozumel.com/donate. Donations are vital to our organization and are greatly appreciated.
You can also be a flight angel from Cozumel or Cancun to Vancouver or Toronto. Feel free to reach out to us directly via Facebook or email to learn more about this opportunity.
If you are in Cozumel Island you can foster one of our pups. Because we do not have a shelter, foster parents are an amazing asset to have.
Like, comment, and share on social media. Sharing our posts and work on Facebook among your friends and family are also a great way to help us.
You can also create a GoFundme Page for us and fundraise for a specific need. Ask us in advance about what we may need the most help with at any given time.
AD: Great! Is There Anything Else You’d Like to Share?
Please donate even if it’s $1 USD or $5 or $10. Every single dollar counts.
So often we encounter people who are ashamed of donating a “small amount” and therefore don’t donate.
Any donation is a GREAT donation because it all sums up at the end. And the end is helping dogs and cats to have better lives.
Your donation, regardless of the amount, was part of that amazing love!
AD: And Finally, Tell Us Your Favorite Dog Joke!
I love this question… just searched for dogs jokes <3

Do you know of an organization that should be featured next? Drop a comment below and let us know too!
Have a dog foster or rescue success story? We’d love to hear that too! Tell us your pup’s heartwarming tale of how you met, the challenges you faced, and of course what your furry friend is up to now! Success stories are a great way to encourage others to choose to rescue!
